New York Fashion Week
Fall/Winter 2015

The Fall/Winter 2015 New York and London Fashion Weeks are already over for this season. One of the biggest trends in the NYFW has been woodland and forestry, both within the fabric prints and the general shape of the garments. Expect dark colours within garments, especially dark purple and blue tones, as well as a pop of a brighter shade such as yellow or orange. In terms of the textures and fabrics, woollen, cotton and denims are trending. Here, I look at three of my favourite designers showing at New York Fashion Week, Fall/Winter 2015; Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan, and Monique Lhuillier.

Tommy Hilfiger

In this season's New York Fashion Week, Tommy Hilfiger introduced darker colours into his Fall/Winter 2015 collection, as well as some lighter shades of brown and pops of yellow and green. The catwalk was very sports-influenced, resembling an American football field. This sports theme was also a clear influence throughout the collection. A range of different sports luxe type garments was on display, including varsity bomber jackets and accessories. Denim, faux fur, velvet and cotton were the key fabrics within Hilfiger's latest release, as predicted for this up and coming season, and were even combined in some outfits. Colour blocking also seemed to be a large trend with this collection, mixing brighter and darker colours. The overall shape of the outfits appeared to be tight-fitted, with a slight kick on those that featured skirts. Lastly, belts on some garments were clearly reminiscent of those fashionable in the 1970s, but scaled down in size.

In contrast, Donna Karan New York had more of a classic, slightly androgynous feel about their collection, with the appearance of dark-coloured tailored suits. With the use of a simple backdrop to accompany the garments, there were clear themes of colour blocking yet again; shades of blue, with red and neutral shades, such as a camel colour. More classic shades - grey, white and black - were also apparent. The colour-blocked garments seemed to acquire a V-neckline on most. Similar to that of Hilfiger, the mix of different weighted fabric was apparent in Donna Karan New York's collection. Another similarity is that Donna Karan New York kept to the apparent trend of more woodland inspired fabrics with the high use of faux fur within their garments. However, a clear difference between the two collections was that Donna Karan New York tended to use a lot more panelling within their collection, as well as prominent rolled high necks on their knitwear. These pieces tended to the oversized and baggy. Other pieces typically had asymmetric hemlines and seams.

Monique Lhuillier exhibited more of a delicate, intricate collection than the previous designers. However, the collection also included a formal, business-like turn, with structured blazers on show. Within her collection was a strong theme of lace fabrics - possibly laser cut - used both alone and combined with other luxurious fabrics, such as satin, faux fur and chiffon, as well as scuba fabric. Suede also featured, paired with faux fur; an unusual mix in my opinion. Lhuillier's Fall/Winter collection also featured several midi length garments - both tight-fitting and more loose-fitted full skirts. The typical colour palette in this collection ranged from black, and deeper purples, to blue and turquoise hues with a pop of yellow. In terms of print, Lhuiller exhibited leaf and floral prints, continuing the woodland type theme. Embellishment was limited to beading and sequins. The typical style of Monique Lhuillier's Fall/Winter collection included the likes of one-shouldered, long, flowing dresses with high necklines.

Overall, the feel of this season's New York Fashion Week was very diverse. These designers seem to have been inspired by dissimilar things, yet draw from the trending theme: DKNY focused more on the shape and colours of woodland; Tommy Hilfiger's inspiration was the fabrics; and Monique Lhuillier's inspiration for her collection clearly originated from the colours and print of the woodland theme. The delicate, feminine fabrics of Monique Lhuillier's collection were my New York Fashion Week highlight. Expect to see this theme in-store in the coming months.
