Interview with Dan and Laura Curtis

Dan & Laura Curtis with Tony Bennet on The One ShowOn the BBC's One Show, with Tony Bennet

Writers and performers Dan and Laura Curtis have a thing for swing. They have performed their Great American Songbook tunes all over the world and have a number 1 album to their credit (Love on 42nd Street), but they are probably best known in Wales for their fundraising work for the the Welsh National Mining Memorial, Senghenydd (which we covered here) and their single A Miner's Song.

A Miner's Song, Dan & Laura Curtis

When we heard a new album was in the pipeline we wanted to find out more...

CC... So, a new album. That's exciting. Tell us all about it.

Laura... Overture is an album of Musical Theatre style numbers featuring twenty five outstanding vocal artists, who are all at the top of their field at the moment, whether that is working in Broadway the West End, television or in the music industry. The music traverses a number of different styles as you would expect, from rock ballads to traditional Musical Theatre.

CC... How did you find the inspiration to write so many songs for one album?

Dan... Finding inspiration can be hard at times, but something that really helps us is thinking about people or stories that we want to write a musical about. For example; we both adore the film You've Got Mail and wanted to write a ballad that Tom Hank's character would sing, had it been a musical. The result was No Disguise performed by Adam Jacobs, who plays Aladdin on Broadway, it's actually one of our favourite tracks on the album.

CC... Did you record the album at one studio?

Dan... We used five different studios in New York, Nashville, New Orleans, London and Wales. We mixed the whole album from Shabbey Road Studios in Caerphilly with our good friends Al Steele and Rob Sherwood. (At least I hope they still count us as friends after the sheer amount of work we snowed them under with on this album).

CC... What was the most memorable moment for you while recording the album?

Laura... It's almost impossible to pick one moment overall, but there is one special moment in each recording session, and that is the first time we hear an artist sing through the song. It's a long process getting that song to the point where it's recorded and it is a feeling that never gets old, hearing somebody other than yourself sing it for the first time. I think we'd both probably agree that is our favourite thing about writing music.

CC... You had a new addition to the family last year, how did that affect working on this project?

Dan... We did indeed welcome our little boy Will in 2015. Funnily enough he's actually sat in on every single recording session – and mostly was really good. It has definitely been a challenge juggling being parents while still working together, luckily we have two pairs of hands between us and we seem to make it work. We really like to have Will with us and involve him in what's going on.

CC... So if you had to tell people why they should buy this album, what would you say?

Laura... I would say if you love Musical Theatre of any style from Phantom Of The Opera through to Once, there is at least one song on this album for you. More likely is that all the songs on this album are for you, as we are simply Musical Theatre fans who write music that we would enjoy listening to in the World. We hope the album introduces listeners to some of the incredible talent that crosses the Atlantic.
