Review: Etc..., Penarth,
Bro Morgannwg / Vale of Glamorgan

Etc 2

I had been meaning to visit Etc... ever since I spotted some photographs of the interior on social media (Facebook). I recall thinking 'anyone who takes so much trouble with the interior will probably do a good job with the food', and I was certainly proved right!Etc... at the table

We stopped off to walk around The Pumping Station (Penarth Road, Cardiff CF11 8TT) on the way. After spending an interesting hour antiquing, we had worked up a decent apetite before driving the couple of miles to Penarth.

Etc... is near to the main Penarth railway station, and is tucked around the side of the main street, at 1 Royal Buildings.

The only issue I noted was the lack of nearby parking spaces, as the station car park was full (we visited midweek), and we had to park in a residential street nearby. But don't let that put you off, the short walk is more than worth it.

The restaurant is beautifully presented from the outside. We were warmly welcomed as soon as we walked in. And as the restaurant was relatively quiet (it was a Thursday lunchtime – they have only recently launched a lunchtime menu) we were given the choice of where to sit. We plumped for the table nearest the window; perfectly placed for people watching.

Etc... has just my type of décor, beautiful statement chandeliers, gilt-framed mirrors adorning every wall, and dark, matt painted walls. The attention to detail does not end there. A particularly nice touch was the miniature birdcage in which the bill was brought, something I have never experienced before and, as a experienced diner, it takes a lot to show me something new and individual.

Menus were brought over promptly, drinks orders taken quickly and water brought for the table; all with a smile and a kind word or two.

We decided against starters, going for for mains and pudding instead. I had an amazing-looking beetroot pasta dish called 'Passion', which consisted of beetroot infused spaghetti in a chicken, pancetta and wild mushroom carbonara sauce, garnished with Parmesan cheese and an edible flower which was deliciously peppery.

My partner choose the veggie bangers & mash - Glamorgan sausages, with paprika mash and cranberry jam. Both dishes were beautifully presented, and tasted just as good as they looked; no mean feat. So, kudos to Etc...'s Consultant Master Chef, Stephen Gomes - no surprise he has won several awards, including two AA rosettes at his Moksh restaurant in Cardiff.

For desert I had 'Zesty lemon heaven', a de-constructed lemon meringue brûlée, with lavender short bread (again beautifully presented on a slate platter). My partner a fantastic dry-ice decorated desert called 'Never ending story'; chocolate hazelnut mousse and chocolate lava. His face when it arrived was worth the cost of the desert alone. And for some moments he was dumbfounded as to whether to eat it... or just stare at it as the dry ice bubbled over the top of the glass, cascading onto the plate beneath (he did eat it, incidentally and enjoyed it thoroughly).

We also met one of the owners of the restaurant who was friendly and welcoming; discussing our mutual love of skull-themed accessories was great fun.

Etc... is a perfect venue for an elegant lunch (please see website for full details) or a very special evening meal (the cocktails look amazing). This is a sophisticated, elegant place to dine, and won't disappoint.
