George Thomas Hospice 'Style In the City' event 29th April 2009.

(May 07, 2009)

We were delighted to be asked to be involved in the George Thomas Hospice 'Style In the City' event, which was organised by noted couture dress designer Helen Rhiannon Gill, who owns the Helen Rhiannon label.

The event took place at the stunningly beautiful Cardiff City Hall on Wednesday, 29th of April.

The evening was a fusion - showcasing some of the best examples of fashion design and manufacture, leisure and artisans in Wales, whilst raising money for the Lord Mayor of Cardiff's two nominated charities - George Thomas Hospice and the British Heart Foundation.

The event format was a champagne reception followed 50-plus exhibitor fayre, then a catwalk show with scenes from the Helen Rhiannon label, Moss Bros, Kate McKenny and Caregos Couture Jewellery.

Of note, were the fabulous millinery and fascinators designed by milliner Kate McKenny. Kate specialises in designs which are individual, flamboyant and chic, while adhering to traditional millinery techniques. The mix in her work, of both the traditional and modern, makes for some really stunning pieces.

Her ease and confidence with colour is evident in the luxurious selection of fabrics, finishes and hues used in her collections.

Helen also uses dramatic fabrics such as the piece below (this camisole formed part of a collection of which was available for purchase during the evening), using the shapes and design of the actual fabric to influence and guide her designs:

Confident use of colour was also evident in the designs exhibited by milliner Catherine Povey (see previous Cymru Culture article on Catherine's work for contact details etc).

Catherine's designs mix both chic simplicty and a fun, almost playful use of colour in her pieces. She has recently launched Catherine Povey Millinery (www.catherinepovey.co.uk), which offers clients the opportunity to commission bespoke pieces. She also owns Pebbles Hat Hire which allows clients to rent well-established pieces from milliners such as Stephen Jones, Phillip Treacy (www.pebbleshathire.co.uk); and

Caregos Couture were asked by George Thomas Hospice to co-design some pieces for auction during the evening, with some high-profile/celebrity co-designers (a popular concept which was started with our charity event at the Oriel Kooywood Art Gallery July 2008).

Caregos co-designed a piece with BBC Newsreader Siân Lloyd, who was inspired by the BBC series, Ashes to Ashes. They also took inspiration from other 80's icons such as Cyndi Lauper and the colour pallette of the decade - which seemed to be dominated by the use of bright 'crayon' neons, acrylics and plastic beads.

The piece is made using a gold plated 18 inch necklace, from which was suspended gold plated stars for added movement and interest. Also sourced were acrycic rich purple and fuschia discs, with the central focal point being a larger, stripped, acrylic pendant.

This piece raised £45 in the charity auction.

Caregos were also asked by George Thomas Hospice to design a piece with the Mayor of Cardiff.  Mayoral jewellery is very heavy and cumbersome, so Caregos took the main themes of Mayoral jewellery (luxurious use of rich golds and worked metals) and incorporated them in a modern piece which could be worn during the day, to less formal events. The Lord Mayor of Cardiff purchased the piece later at the auction, along with matching earrings and some other Caregos pieces.

A number of new pieces from the Caregos Couture Spring/Summer ranges were showcased in a catwalk scene, some of which are pictured below.

Style Choker 1

The above piece is an elaborate Caregos Couture choker, made using an assortment of Jet coloured Swarovski drops, together with Swarovski 'Galactic' and bicone crystals. Added interest and movement is achieved by the addition of lengths of solid silver trace chain. The choker is an antique solid silver chain which we have re-conditioned, polished and customised to achieve the correct neck-length for this design.

The piece was originally designed for Siân Lloyd to wear during her recent Vagina Monologue performances at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff. However Siân decided to wear one of Caregos' other designs (a high neck choker) instead.

The individual who purchased this piece is planning on wearing it to the Bafta Cymru awards this May, which is really flattering for the designer.

Another piece, showcased by Caregos, was an Egyptian inspired choker made using gold plated discs, hammered rounds and Swarovski Jet round pendants, Also used are a selection of Swarovski pearls, gold plated bead caps and Swarovski bicones. The piece, which has tremendous movement, is similar to a coloured piece owned personally by ITV weather presenter, Siân Lloyd.
