The Manor Town House, Fishguard

(June 01, 2014)

The Manor Town House, Fishguard

We've visited Fishguard (Abergwaun), north Pembrokeshire before, and stayed nearby, but had never stayed in Fishguard itself. When I came across the details for The Manor Town House it seemed exactly what we were looking for; a short break in a luxurious and stylish 4 star B&B, and a good base for visiting places such as Cardigan, Milford Haven and Mwnt Church, all within easy reach.

The Manor Town House is on Main Street/Ffordd y Cwm, Fishguard. So, no on-site parking. Parking is available, however, a short distance away. Just be sure to buy a parking ticket and re-new it each morning before nine!

We received a warm welcome from hosts and owners Helen and Chris, bringing a welcome tray of hot tea and welsh cakes to us, as we rested in one of their two stylish sitting rooms, before checking into our room.

Our room was lovely. Although not necessarily my taste, as I prefer something more modern, it is hard to not like beautiful, crisp bed linen, a spotless bathroom, and antique furniture, fixtures and fittings, so please do not see this as a criticism!

I had a look around the other bedrooms (with prior permission from Helen). All were beautifully decorated and appointed. The attention to detail is really exceptional and Helen has an undoubted sense of style and restraint.

The next morning, we enjoyed a hearty and well-cooked breakfast. Its choice and quality is really to be commended, which includes choice of waffles; cereals, yoghurt and fruit; toast with conserve or honey; followed by a choice of Full Welsh Breakfast (with a vegetarian option), including laverbread; scrambled eggs (with or without smoked salmon); or smoked haddock. I understand that, on a fine morning, you can enjoy your breakfast on the hotel's garden terrace, which has the same spectacular views of the sea, the Preseli Hills Fishguard's Lower Harbour and cwm as we had from our bedroom. Though sadly, we were not that lucky with the weather when we stayed. Next time, perhaps.

One our way west, we had stopped for lunch at (the very pleasant) Wright's Food Emporium, Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire. Take a look at our interview with owner Simon Wright, before the move to their latest site.

Lunch for me was a delicious beef sandwich and hubby had a type of risotto cooked with mushrooms and herbs, both of which were flavoursome and cooked beautifully fresh and well.

Hubby had a chocolate sponge desert, which he remarked was lovely; very rich and satisfying.

Then made our way to the lovely town of Cardigan. For lunch, we had booked a table at 25 Mile, a restaurant we have reviewed previously I am delighted to announce that the quality of service, and food, remains excellent, as it was the last time we visited.
