Photographic study; Ruthin 2014

Photographic study; Ruthin, 2014

Denbighshire's beautiful, historic county town of Ruthin, north Wales, is set on a hill overlooking Dyffryn Clwyd. St Peter's Square, the picturesque town centre, lies between Ruthin's parish church and the castle, the only buildings to have survived Owain Glyndŵr's visit in 1400, the first action of the Last War of Welsh Independence.

We had the pleasure of staying in Ruthin for a few days in May 2014. Here are some of my favourite images from this trip.

This delightful wool shop caught my eye - something so unusual and different as compared to the 'chains' I am so used to seeing, working in Cardiff. I especially love the way the window is merchandised, using the old style lead-lined panes like frames for the different items displayed (and presumably all handmade).

What I especially like discovering is un-usual details on buildings, such as old-style doorbells and door furniture (such as letter boxes and door handles). Here is an excellent example of a detail which is rarely seen further south.

Loved this old bicycle, just leant up against a building, being used as an advertising tool for a local butchers. A simple but very effective idea.

St Peter's Square is charming and beautifully laid out, with lots of interesting architectural details such as these iconic chimneys on this wonderful old roof.

If you are interested in staying in Ruthin, take a look at my review of the Ruthin Castle Hotel (not to be confused with the Castle Hotel, St Peter's Square, Ruthin, shown above).
