Handmade Cards

I have always bought my birthday, anniversary and leaving cards from high-street cards shops, making the most of the convenience and wide range available. But I have always been more attracted by handmade cards – especially those with a modern or Scandi-chic feel. I love cards with loads of texture and interest, ones that use luxurious fabrics and trims such as rhinestones and feathers, but these are so hard to find - unless you attend craft fairs and the like?

So, I decided to have a go at designing my own cards.

I have a hoard of trims: long-discarded clothes; sewed-on jewels; ribbons saved from promotional packaging; remnants of ribbon, feathers, pom-poms and rhinestones bought from Ebay and haberdashery departments for other projects; and old pieces of jewellery. I also save old pieces of fabric such as Dupion silks, velvets and corduroys, so the choice of materials I had is large.

I also bought some packs of felt and foam from Poundland (£1 each, of course) and a selection of Christmas decorations, which I thought would work well on Christmas cards, such as: laser cut felt coasters from Poundland (pack of four for a £1); and handmade felt animals from Primark (three for £3.00).

Card blanks (and matching envelopes) are available at all stationers. But, having been to a large number of them reviewing the ranges, I feel the best quality, best priced and biggest range of cards is available at The Works (I've also been told that Ebay is a great source of these materials).

A six pack of gold or silver cards (high quality) and matching envelopes are £1.00; also available in red and green, and natural packs (one of my favourites, as they are so textured). The traditional white/cream packs are also available, and in a large number of different shapes and finishes.
