Review: La Luna, Talbot Green

Review: La Luna, Tonysguboriau (Talbot Green),
Rhondda Cynon Taf

La Luna, Tonysguboriau

La Luna, TonysguboriauTonysguboriau is a modern, growing town in Cwm Elai in the parish of Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Talbot Green, as it's commonly known, is between Cardiff and Bridgend, two miles north of the M4; about 10-12 miles from each. The Royal Glamorgan Hospital and several large businesses have their headquarters in Tonysguboriau (including Tŵr Cymru Culture Towers) but, possibly because so few people have heard of it, most think of them as in Llantrisant. Even its golf club, around five minutes walk from the bus station, chooses not to acknowledge the town, calling itself the Llantrisant and Pontyclun Golf Club.

The town is probably best known in the surrounding area as the location of two retail parks (the usual mix of identikit English shops), and a huge Tesco Extra along the A4119 road between the M4 and the Rhondda Valleys. Another retail park is in the process of being built on the Afon Clun's flood meadow, but the old village centre has a pleasant, unhurried feel, with its mostly independent shops and services. It is, however, blessed with two excellent restaurants (please see previous review for La Trattoria), one of which, La Luna, has always been a personal favourite of mine.

So, why so biased….? Well, the food is delicious (they have been awarded an AA rosette 'for culinary excellence') and beautifully presented in a modern but unpretentious style, generous in portions and the service is always excellent. Other details such as good quality table linen, glassware and crockery also shows the attention to detail which can be expected.

Also, and what I specifically like about La Luna, is that is caters for every diner's requirements.

The downstairs restaurant is spacious, offering a good lunchtime special menu (2 courses for £11.99, including a small glass of wine, per person – a three course option is also available for £14.99 and perfect for people working to a specific budget), fine dining in the evening (with an 'early bird offer' from 5.30 pm and before 7 pm) and Tapas and cocktails (they have an extensive cocktail list) on the top floor.

They also have an extensive garden and patio area called 'The Secret Garden' (to the back of the property), which can be used by patrons or rented for private parties and gatherings (the warm blankets supplied are a thoughtful touch).

I recently took a visiting friend from Europe to the restaurant. I had the goats cheese and beetroot starter, and my friend the pork belly. For main we both had the slow-roasted lamb for main, and we thoroughly enjoyed both.

As always, the service was attentive, but unobtrusive, and very professional, making you feel really welcome.

We ended our lunch by finishing our drinks in the patio area to the front of the restaurant, while sat in the sun people watching.

The restaurant also has a private dining area (suitable for intimate dinners for small to medium sized parties up to a maximum 14) and a larger function room for bigger events.
