Review: La Trattoria, Talbot Green

Review: La Trattoria, Tonysguboriau (Talbot Green),
Rhondda Cynon Taf

Trattoria 4

La Trattoria opened in 2004, when the Florimonte family brought their authentic taste of southern Italy (San Giovanni a Piro) to Tonysguboriau, Rhondda Cynon Taf. However, we had not eaten there for several years, as there is a very well respected restaurant nearby that is a personal favourite of mine called La Luna (see our review of La Luna here). So, we decided to see what this establishment offered – and we were so glad that we did.

La Trattoria is situated on the main street of Talbot Green (Tonysguboriau). It is attractively presented from the outside, with outdoor seating under a wooden canopy and decorated with Mediterranean-themed pot plants and outdoor lighting (lovely to sit in, in the summer, whilst people watching and enjoying a chilled glass of white wine).

The restaurant's attractive Deli is alongside (which can be accessed by walking through the restaurant or through a front door of its own right), selling a wide selection of dried pasta, fresh breads, cakes/baked goods, olive oils and tinned ingredients. The Deli also operates as an informal coffee shop, whilst looking out on the main high street (again great for people watching!).

Entering the restaurant, you are greeted by traditional Italian décor. The seating and details such as glassware and crockery are modern, well considered and perfectly clean.

We were welcomed and shown to a table (without having booked on a Thursday lunchtime) and studied the two different menus, which were brought over quickly.

The restaurant was reasonably full, a mixture of families, 'ladies that lunch' and business people. The atmosphere was relaxed.

Water was brought to the table as a matter of course, and our request for a large glass of red wine each was brought over quickly, as were our orders. (This is typical of the service we received, swift, professional but unobtrusive).

Very soon our starters arrived.

We both ordered Mozzarella and tomato from the main menu (if you prefer, you can make use of the lunchtime specials menu - two courses for under £11.00, which includes a small glass of wine per person).

I had Puttenesca for my main, and my husband had an Aubergine and Tomato dish called Paccheri Mezzogi – both were delicious and served piping hot (with a generous dusting of Parmesan on each, served to taste at the table).

Two courses from the main (not lunchtime specials) menu, two large glasses of red wine and a side salad came to £42.00, which we thought excellent value.

The restaurant is very popular at weekends, so booking would be advisable.

They also hold pasta making sessions at the restaurant, which are very popular for birthdays and hen evenings.
